da realsbet: Manuel Pellegrini is the high profile manager brought in to West Ham to lift the club’s ambitions and stature, and when you hear reports linking the Hammers with a move for Andre Gomes you realise that the club really do mean business.
The desire to compete with the best in English football is certainly there, but with the Hammers targeting such high-profile names, opportunities for youngsters are going to be more limited than ever before.
A few have had their chances under Pellegrini, but who will benefit the most from a loan move away from West Ham, with the hope of one day coming back and claiming a spot in the starting XI?
Grady Diangana – Winger – 21
Diangana, at 21 years-old, will perhaps be feeling like he needs regular game-time. While 21 is still a young age for a footballer, it’s also a crucial time in which you want to be playing as much as possible. In all fairness, he’s had some game-time under Manuel Pellegrini, but a loan move to a Championship club would do him the world of good.
He’s modern winger with great skill and pace, and another side would do well to get in him for a season, knowing he already has experience playing at the top level.
Xande Silva – Forward – 22
At 22, Silva is even older than Diangana but plays more predominantly up front. The Portuguese forward arrived from Vitoria Guimaraes and has registered seven goals in eight appearances in the Premier League 2.
He may well want to stay at West Ham and prove his worth, especially with the Hammers struggling to find a regular number 9 to lead the line. However, a move away would be great to give him exposure to first-team football, perhaps in the lower leagues, where he’ll ultimately get much more of a taste of what English football has to offer.
Joe Powell – Attacking midfield – 20
The 20-year-old is a wonderfully gifted talent, playing as an attacking midfielder but also capable of operating out wide. Attacking midfielders with an eye for goal are a dying breed but Powell’s still flying the flag, scoring seven goals in 12 appearances in the Premier League 2 for the Hammers.
He’s also registered six assists in those games as well, showing just how productive he can be in the final third.
At 20 years old, Powell may want to express his obvious talent in the football league or perhaps at a Premier League club, so a loan move would certainly help him develop further.
Nathan Holland – Winger – 20
Holland is one of West Ham’s hottest prospects, but an ankle injury delayed his development. At 20 years-old, he’ll be looking to get some regular game time soon, and a loan move away would suit him perfectly.
He’s currently facing competition in the first-team side with Manuel Lanzini, Felipe Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko, Robert Snodgrass, Michail Antonio and Grady Diangana, but is at an age where he really should be playing regularly, so looking to move down the leagues for more game time would be a wise move on his part.
Conor Coventry – Holding midfield – 19
He’s made 17 appearances in the Premier League 2, but game-time for the first-team will be even harder to come by for young Coventry. At 19-years-old a loan move perhaps isn’t urgent, but it would certainly benefit him.
As a holding midfielder, he’s currently competing with the magnificent Declan Rice, club captain Mark Noble and the experienced Robert Snodgrass for a place in the squad. A move to a club in the lower divisions who look to play football in the same way as Pellegrini’s West Ham will be the best way to ensure he’s learning and developing in a challenging enough league for him.
