Journalist Joe Crann has hailed Will Vaulks’ performance in Sheffield Wednesday’s 3-1 win at home to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.
The Lowdown: Wednesday see off Wycombe
The Owls were back in League One action at Hillsborough, in what had the potential to be a tricky outing against last season’s playoff finalists.
Darren Moore’s side prevailed in the end, however, with Barry Bannan and Callum Paterson amongst the goalscorers, as Wednesday jumped to third in the table.
Vaulks started the game and performed well, winning four aerial duels, making two clearances and completing one key pass, producing a strong all-round midfield display.
The Latest: Crann hails Vaulks’ display
Taking to Twitter, Crann lauded the 29-year-old’s showing at Hillsborough, as the Owls got back to winning ways in the league:
“Said before the game that it was a big opportunity for Will Vaulks today, and I thought he was very, very solid in the midfield. Tidy performance, could’ve scored, and barely put a foot wrong.”
The Verdict: Looking like a good signing
Vaulks was one of the many signings who joined Wednesday this summer and he is already looking like a good addition, bringing technical quality and defensive work to the midfield.
He is an unsung player, in many ways, with others making the headlines, but he complements the more forward-thinking midfielders such as Bannan and Josh Windass, mucking in and doing a lot of the dirty work.
Vaulks is forcing his way into Moore’s best starting XI at the moment, with so much competition throughout the squad, and his display on Saturday will only strengthen his case moving forward.
